Consumer Advice – Toppling Information
Australian Consumer law and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have implemented new legislation to increase awareness with the risks associated of toppling furniture, by warning consumers to anchor furniture to prevent furniture tip overs, serious injury or fatalities.
This new information Consumer Goods (Toppling Furniture) Information Standard 2024 (the Mandatory Information Standard) compliance for retailers, suppliers and manufacturers with this standard is compulsory and takes full effect from 4 May 2025,. https://www.productsafety.gov.au/business/search-mandatory-standards/toppling-furniture-mandatory-standard.
Specific warnings and information
To prevent furniture from tipping over it is strongly recommended that you secure relevant furniture to a wall or other solid surface, using an anchoring device such as straps, brackets or cables
A warning label has been placed on relevant furniture
- Given the variety of wall types, anchoring systems will vary.
- Hardware stores have a range of anchoring products to
choose from.
- Woods Furniture recommend asking your local hardware store for anchoring system advice and suitability.
Anchoring Guidance
Walls are constructed from different materials, for example, studded plaster board walls, masonry or steel etc. It is important that you use the appropriate wall fixings for your wall type to anchor these products.
